Dear Takoma Park Family and Friends,
Much has transpired over the last few days with regard to the coronavirus (COVID-19) and it seems that things are escalating rapidly. We are continuously monitoring credible news and information outlets to be certain we have the latest and most accurate information to help guide our decisions at the Takoma Park Church with regard to the safety of our members and friends. The purpose of this letter is to communicate that safety information to you.
Yesterday afternoon the governor of Maryland activated an executive order “…prohibiting any social, community, religious, recreational or sports gatherings or events of more than 250 people in close proximity at all locations and venues across the state [of Maryland].” For this reason, we have cancelled our in-person church services for March 14th and 21st to begin, and will continue to monitor the situation for the weeks ahead. We invite you to worship with us online at 11:30am on any of our platforms (YouTube, Facebook Live and our website: http://www.thetpchurch.org).
While we are away from each other, use this time to study your Bible and pray for God’s protection. Remember to wash your hands, disinfect commonly used surfaces like doorknobs and handles, and sneeze or cough into a tissue and throw it away. If you don’t have a tissue, turn away from people and cough into your sleeve or your shoulder. Simple tips like these can help to reduce the spread of the virus.
We know this change represents a major shift in our usual practice and we apologize for the inconvenience, but we believe this is the safest course of action for our community. In times like these, when we are tempted to panic or lose hope, I like to remember the words of John 16:33 (ESV), “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Our Lord reminds us that we can have courage even in fearful times like these because He has already conquered this world. Let’s keep our trust in Him and He will see us through.
